Dr. Smith stated, "We want it to actually look like a corporate learning environment where they’re going to work every day."

The 18 PLUSS program serves special education students who have completed their high school requirements and are engaged in a one-to-three-year program focused on job skills. Brenda Cupps, the curriculum coordinator for the 18 PLUSS program, emphasized the core mission: "The biggest thing about 18 PLUSS is working on specially-designed instruction in the area of vocation and employability. We specialize in working on finding them a job that fits their needs." Beyond job placement, the program is also deeply committed to teaching independence, a sentiment echoed by Dr. Smith: "Our job is to help prepare them for life."

The new center, designed by VLK Architects, will be built on the site of the former Blanton Elementary School. The plan involves renovating existing newer portions of the old school and adding a substantial 43,500-square-foot addition, effectively reinventing the campus. A particularly exciting feature is the inclusion of a public-facing café and spirit shop, which will be run and staffed by 18 PLUSS students. This initiative provides invaluable real-world experience, allowing students to learn about customer service, operations, and business management in a supportive environment. Dr. Smith envisions the facility hosting community meetings where 18 PLUSS students can operate the coffee shop, further integrating their learning with community engagement. Outside, the center will boast a basketball court, a garden, a greenhouse, and an outdoor classroom. Ms. Cupps explained the benefits of the garden, stating it will "provide students hands-on experience planting, growing, and harvesting fresh produce." This outdoor classroom will allow students to develop vocational skills, learn about healthy nutrition, practice teamwork, and build responsibility through the care and maintenance of the garden.

For students in K-12 and those preparing for various exams, developing these foundational skills is paramount.
