ASVAB AFQT Score Explained: What You Need to Enlist

If you're thinking about enlisting, the number that decides whether you qualify is your AFQT score — and it's a percentile from 1 to 99, not a raw point total. It's calculated from four of the ASVAB subtests, and the minimum needed to enlist varies by branch and changes over time. You can estimate your AFQT percentile from practice results with our free ASVAB AFQT calculator.

What the AFQT actually is

AFQT stands for Armed Forces Qualification Test, and it's a percentile that tells you how you scored compared with a reference group of test-takers. An AFQT of 60, for example, means you scored as well as or better than about 60% of that group. It is built from four ASVAB subtests:

  • Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
  • Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
  • Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
  • Word Knowledge (WK)

AFQT is not the same as your line scores

This trips a lot of people up, so it's worth being clear: the AFQT decides whether you can enlist, but it is not the same as the full ASVAB line (composite) scores that determine which jobs you qualify for. You take the whole ASVAB, the AFQT comes from those four subtests above, and the other subtests feed the line scores used for job placement. You want to do well across the board, not just on the AFQT four.

Minimum AFQT to enlist, by branch (approximate)

Minimums vary by branch and change over time, and they're often higher if you have a GED rather than a high-school diploma. Treat these as rough, approximate figures and confirm the current requirement with a recruiter or official branch source:

  • Army — roughly 31.
  • Navy — roughly 31.
  • Marines — roughly 31-32.
  • Air Force — roughly 31+.
  • Coast Guard — roughly 36-40.

These move, so don't treat any single number as locked in. The Coast Guard tends to set a higher bar, and a GED can raise the minimum across branches.

How to raise your AFQT

Because the AFQT leans on math and verbal skills, that's where focused practice pays off fastest. Brush up on arithmetic reasoning and math fundamentals, and build vocabulary and reading comprehension. Steady practice with the question types beats cramming. The free percentage calculator is handy while you sharpen the math side.
