What the AFQT actually is

AFQT stands for Armed Forces Qualification Test, and it's a percentile that tells you how you scored compared with a reference group of test-takers. An AFQT of 60, for example, means you scored as well as or better than about 60% of that group. It is built from four ASVAB subtests:

• Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
• Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
• Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
• Word Knowledge (WK)

AFQT is not the same as your line scores

• Army — roughly 31.
• Navy — roughly 31.
• Marines — roughly 31-32.
• Air Force — roughly 31+.
• Coast Guard — roughly 36-40.

These move, so don't treat any single number as locked in. The Coast Guard tends to set a higher bar, and a GED can raise the minimum across branches.
