College Track and Cal Poly Partner to Fully Cover Housing and Tuition for First-Generation Scholars

For many bright, ambitious students, the dream of a college degree can feel out of reach due to financial hurdles, particularly the rising costs of housing and living expenses. This is especially true for first-generation college students, who often navigate the complexities of higher education without the familial experience or financial safety net enjoyed by some of their peers. That's why a recent announcement from College Track and Cal Poly is such welcome news: a new partnership designed to dismantle these very barriers for deserving California scholars.

According to College Track, this collaboration will provide fully covered on-campus housing, mandatory tuition and fees, and food costs for 10-15 high-need California scholars attending Cal Poly. This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that talent and potential, rather than financial circumstance, determine a student's educational path.

Addressing a Critical Need: Housing as a Foundation for Success

The cost of college extends far beyond tuition, with housing often representing one of the most substantial and overlooked expenses. For first-generation and low-income students, securing stable and affordable housing can be a constant source of stress, impacting their ability to focus on academics and ultimately, their persistence and graduation rates. College Track emphasizes that on-campus housing at California's public universities is frequently limited and rarely subsidized, creating a significant gap that disproportionately affects these students.

This partnership directly tackles this structural barrier. By covering housing, tuition, fees, and dining costs, College Track and Cal Poly are creating an environment where scholars can immerse themselves in their studies and campus life without the crushing burden of housing insecurity. Dr. Shirley M. Collado, President and CEO of College Track, states that this partnership delivers on the promise of higher education by offering "something incredibly rare: two distinct campus experiences with meaningful pathways into the workforce," and notes that the fully funded room and board enables scholars to "focus completely on earning their degree and launching into a future they've worked to build."

Furthermore, eligible scholars at Cal Poly's San Luis Obispo and Solano campuses will be invited to participate in the Cal Poly Promise Scholars program, which offers additional financial, academic, and community support. The Cal Poly Maritime Academy, located on the Solano campus, requires most students to live on campus for all four years, making the housing coverage provided by this partnership particularly vital for those pursuing maritime degrees.

College Track's Enduring Commitment to First-Generation Scholars

This new partnership with Cal Poly marks College Track's 23rd college and university collaboration and its second with a California State University (CSU) campus. This expands College Track's growing network across 13 communities nationwide, showcasing the organization's sustained dedication to its mission: equipping first-generation scholars to earn a bachelor's degree and build lives filled with opportunity, choice, purpose, and power.

College Track's approach goes beyond financial aid. Scholars attending Cal Poly through this partnership will continue to receive comprehensive support services, including one-on-one coaching, career readiness assistance, financial literacy education, and community-building opportunities. These resources are crucial for navigating the academic and social landscape of college, ensuring students not only enroll but thrive and graduate.

The organization reports that more than 4,500 College Track high school and college students across California, Colorado, Louisiana, and the D.C.–Maryland area are pursuing their goal of becoming the first in their family to graduate from college. According to College Track, 93% of their scholars are first in their family to attend college, and 90% come from under-resourced communities. Impressively, College Track alumni graduate at more than two times the national rate for first-generation peers, underscoring the profound impact of their long-term support model.

The Power of Partnership and Community Support

The collaboration was made possible through the Madden family, longtime Cal Poly supporters, whose introduction to College Track helped facilitate the partnership. Mike Madden, Board member of Madden Charities and The John Madden Foundation, shared that his father worked closely with Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong to establish the Madden Scholarship Program for Oakland students, and that Board member Susie Lorenzi had the idea to bring College Track and Cal Poly together. This highlights how dedicated individuals and foundations can play a pivotal role in creating life-changing opportunities for students.
