Final Grade Calculator: What Do I Need on My Final Exam?

This is one of the most-asked questions before finals week, and the math is friendlier than you'd think. To find the score you need on your final, you just rearrange the weighted-average formula your class already uses. Our free final grade calculator does it instantly, but here's exactly how it works.

What you need to know first

  • Your current grade in the class (as a percentage).
  • The grade you want in the class overall.
  • How much the final is worth (its weight as a percentage of the total).

The formula

Required final score = (goal grade - current grade x (1 - final weight)) divided by the final weight. In plain terms: figure out how much your existing work contributes, then see how much the final has to make up.

A worked example

Suppose your current grade is 85%, your final is worth 20% of the course, and you want an 80% overall. Your existing work is worth 80% of the grade, contributing 0.80 x 85 = 68 points. You need 80 total, so the final must supply 80 - 68 = 12 points out of its 20% weight. Divide: 12 / 0.20 = 60. You'd need a 60% on the final to land at an 80% overall — very doable.

Reading the result honestly

Sometimes the math says you need a 105%, which means your goal isn't reachable with this final alone — time to talk to your teacher about extra credit or adjust the target. Other times it says you need a 40%, which means you can breathe. Either way, knowing the real number beats guessing. Remember that your syllabus is the source of truth for how grades are weighted.

Run your scenario

Plug your numbers into the final grade calculator to see exactly what you need, and use the semester grade calculator to combine everything afterward. If you want a focused plan for the final, COSMIQ's free voice tutor is free for every student.
