Flandreau Indian School Students Tackle Epic 1976 Ford F-350 Trades Toolbox Project
In an exciting development for career and technical education (CTE), Northern Tool + Equipment has announced a unique challenge for students at Flandreau Indian School. This school year, 14 dedicated CTE students will embark on a journey to transform a vintage 1976 Ford F-350 utility truck into what the organization is calling "America's Ultimate Trades Toolbox™." This ambitious project is designed to give students invaluable real-world experience, expose them to diverse career pathways in the skilled trades, and culminate in a national spotlight at the prestigious SEMA Show in 2027.
For parents, teachers, and students considering future career paths, this initiative highlights the immense value of hands-on learning and practical skills. It underscores how immersive projects can bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice, preparing young people for in-demand jobs in vital industries.
A Project Paving Pathways in Skilled Trades
According to Northern Tool + Equipment, the "Build IV" project marks several significant firsts for their student build program. It's the first time the program is hosted at a tribal school, and notably, half of the student build team is female, promoting inclusivity and demonstrating that skilled trades are for everyone. Throughout the 2026-2027 school year, students will immerse themselves in various disciplines, including welding, fabrication, automotive repair, paint and bodywork, and design. This comprehensive approach ensures a broad understanding of the trades involved in such a complex undertaking.
The vision for the 1976 Ford F-350 is to convert its six utility compartments and truck bed into a showcase of tools, craftsmanship, and the diverse career opportunities available within the skilled trades. This hands-on experience, working alongside industry professionals, is designed to be transformative. Everall Fox, Superintendent of Flandreau Indian School, expressed gratitude, stating, "We are grateful to be approached by a company that wants to invest in our school and growing CTE program without asking for anything in return. No endorsement of products; it's just about the kids and creating a better future for them."
For students navigating challenging projects or complex subjects, remember that free learning support is always available. Tools like COSMIQ, a voice-driven AI tutor, can help clarify concepts, explain techniques, and provide personalized assistance, making even the most intricate aspects of a project more manageable.
Mentorship and Industry Collaboration
A crucial aspect of this project is the direct mentorship students will receive. Northern Tool + Equipment reports that renowned custom painter and builder Keaton Lee will serve as a build mentor. Lee shared his enthusiasm, stating, "This is going to be an amazing experience for the students. I'm excited to get to work with this group and provide them with knowledge that will change their lives."
Further strengthening the project's educational impact, the team at Einspahr Ford in Brookings, South Dakota, has also joined the Build. Their trained Ford technicians and experts will work alongside students, helping them diagnose problems, understand the truck's mechanics, and gain exposure to professional automotive work. According to Northern Tool + Equipment, Einspahr Ford will also help provide students interested in automotive careers with potential pathways beyond the Build, including opportunities to further explore the industry.
Frank Crowson, Chief Commercial Officer for Northern Tool + Equipment, emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the initiative. "No one company can solve the skilled trades gap alone, but together we can give young people a much clearer view of the incredible opportunities waiting for them," he said. "We're proud to bring together some of the best brands and people in the industry for Build IV—not to build this for the students, but to give them the tools, expertise and opportunity to build it themselves."
Equipping the Next Generation
The project also involves significant contributions from industry partners. Northern Tool + Equipment is collaborating with DEWALT to equip the school's shop with professional-grade tools, an investment that the organization says will benefit students for years. J. Brooke Roberts, president of Farm & Hardware DEWALT, highlighted the importance of this support: "The future of the skilled trades depends on giving young people the tools, experiences and exposure to see what's possible. Build IV does exactly that."
Additionally, House of Kolor will play a vital role by helping to reopen the school's paint booth and supplying the necessary paint for the truck's transformation. Tony D'Acquisto, Vice President of Marketing for Sherwin-Williams, expressed their honor in supporting the project, noting that it's a fitting way to continue House of Kolor's legacy by inspiring the next generation of auto enthusiasts and painters.
The students have until May 5, 2027, to complete the build, with a local reveal planned later that month. The culmination of their hard work will be in November 2027, when the transformed F-350 takes center stage as a featured vehicle at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, a premier automotive aftermarket event. Joe Escobar, SEMA's Recognition Program Manager, expressed his pride in showcasing what these students will build, stating, "This Student Build is proof that the future of the automotive aftermarket and trades is in good hands."
For students interested in exploring the foundational principles behind automotive engineering or the physics of tool design, COSMIQ's free practice hub offers resources across various subjects and grades, helping solidify understanding outside the workshop.
Following the Journey
The public can follow the students' progress through monthly updates on Northern Tool's YouTube channel, with the series hosted by Jesse James Dupree. Updates will also be shared on Northern Tool's Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok channels throughout the school year. This project is the fourth student Build organized by Northern Tool + Equipment, and for the second consecutive year, the students' journey will also be documented as an eight-episode television series premiering in October 2027 on RACER Network.
This initiative by Northern Tool + Equipment, Flandreau Indian School, and their partners represents a powerful model for experiential learning, demonstrating how industry collaboration can empower students with practical skills and open doors to promising career opportunities in the skilled trades.
