How Long Does It Take to Read X Words?

The quick answer is a simple division: reading time is roughly the word count divided by your reading speed. At an average adult pace of about 250 words per minute, a 5,000-word article takes around 20 minutes. Your real time will vary with the difficulty of the text and your own speed, so treat any estimate as a ballpark. You can run the numbers instantly with our free reading time calculator.

The formula

It's worth understanding so you can do it in your head. Take the total number of words and divide by your words-per-minute pace. For 5,000 words at 250 wpm: 5,000 / 250 = 20 minutes. Bump your pace to 300 wpm and the same piece drops to a little under 17 minutes; slow to 200 wpm for tough material and it climbs to about 25. Small changes in pace add up over long readings.

Rough times at an average pace

Here are some everyday word counts at roughly 250 wpm — approximate, and they'll shift with your speed and the difficulty of the text:

COSMIQ — Demo — Show your work

  • 500 words — about 2 minutes.
  • 1,000 words — about 4 minutes.
  • 5,000 words — about 20 minutes.
  • 10,000 words — about 40 minutes.
  • A 50,000-word book — roughly 3 to 3.5 hours of pure reading.

Why your real time will differ

These estimates assume steady silent reading of fairly typical prose. Dense textbooks, technical papers, and anything you need to truly absorb will run slower because you'll pause, reread, and take notes. Light fiction or familiar material goes faster. If you're reading to learn rather than to skim, plan for extra time and breaks — and remember that understanding, not raw speed, is the real goal.
