How to Calculate a Weighted GPA with AP and Honors Classes
A weighted GPA rewards tougher courses by adding bonus points before you average. The common pattern is roughly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class can count as a 5.0. The exact bonus and cap vary by school, so confirm yours — and let our free weighted GPA calculator handle the arithmetic.
How the bonus usually works
- Regular class — A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on (no bonus).
- Honors class — often +0.5, so an A counts around 4.5.
- AP or IB class — often +1.0, so an A counts around 5.0.
- Some schools cap weighted GPAs or use different bonuses entirely — always check your handbook.
The steps
- Convert each grade to its base grade points on the 4.0 scale.
- Add the rigor bonus for any Honors, AP, or IB class.
- Multiply each adjusted value by the course's credits.
- Add up the totals and divide by total credits.
A worked example
Say you took four 1-credit classes: an A in AP Calculus (4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0), an A in Honors English (4.0 + 0.5 = 4.5), a B in regular Chemistry (3.0), and an A in regular Spanish (4.0). Add them: 5.0 + 4.5 + 3.0 + 4.0 = 16.5. Divide by 4 classes and your weighted GPA is about 4.13. The same grades on an unweighted scale would be (4.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0) / 4 = 3.75.
Why colleges still read your transcript
A weighted GPA signals that you challenged yourself, but many colleges recalculate GPA on their own scale and look closely at which AP and Honors courses you actually took. The weighted number is a helpful summary, not the whole story, so keep taking rigorous classes you can succeed in. Policies differ by school, so don't assume one approach.
