How to Calculate Your Semester Grade
Your semester grade is a weighted average of everything that counts toward the class — tests, quizzes, homework, projects, and often a final exam — each multiplied by its weight. The key is using the weights from your syllabus, not a plain average. Our free semester grade calculator does the weighting for you, and I'll show the steps.
Find your category weights
Most classes group your work into categories that each carry a percentage of the grade. A typical setup might look like the list below, but every teacher is different, so pull the exact weights from your syllabus.
- Tests — for example, 40% of the grade.
- Quizzes — for example, 20%.
- Homework — for example, 15%.
- Final exam — for example, 25%.
The formula
Semester grade = the sum of (each category average x its weight). Make sure your weights add up to 100% before you start, or the result will be off.
A worked example
Using the weights above, say you earned 90% on tests, 85% on quizzes, 100% on homework, and 80% on the final. Multiply each by its weight: (0.40 x 90) + (0.20 x 85) + (0.15 x 100) + (0.25 x 80) = 36 + 17 + 15 + 20 = 88. Your semester grade is an 88%. Notice how the heavily weighted tests and final shaped the result more than homework did.
Watch the weights
The single most common mistake is averaging categories as if they're equal. A perfect homework score helps less than it feels like when homework is only 15% of the grade. If your school converts percentages to letter grades and then to GPA, check your handbook for the exact cutoffs, since those vary.
