Ken Turner, an instruction and technology coach at Ingham ISD, secured the top prize for his startup, UnscriptED. According to Michigan Virtual, UnscriptED offers a library of live, whole-class classroom simulations. These simulations immerse students in historical and real-world roles, transforming curriculum into dynamic, engaging experiences.

Turner's vision with UnscriptED is to provide opportunities for students and teachers to practice what they're learning through relevant characters and assigned roles. This approach allows students to connect lessons to real-life scenarios, while also enabling educators to convey complex concepts more effectively. According to the organization, this was the fifth year of the EdTech Innovation Bootcamp, and its largest to date, with more than 35 participants. Jamey Fitzpatrick, President and CEO at Michigan Virtual, expressed his inspiration for the educators involved, stating, “I’m inspired by the vision these educators bring each year, and the challenges they’re moved to solve when shaping the future of learning.”

The competition awarded a share of $22,000 in business startup grants to five finalists. Turner received $10,000 in grant funding, along with startup legal consultation from FosterSwift and creative support from Design Harmony, according to Michigan Virtual. This comprehensive support package is designed to help these promising ventures grow and reach more students and educators.

Highlighting Other Innovative Solutions

While UnscriptED took the top spot, the competition showcased a remarkable array of talent and innovative ideas. Michigan Virtual recognized several other impactful solutions:

• Second Place: Elevate-Ed by Sarah Pilarski. A county-level school counselor and career readiness consultant, Pilarski founded Elevate-Ed, a mobile and web-based platform designed to support new educator onboarding through a structured framework and connect mentees directly with their mentors. She received $6,000 in grant funding and legal consultation.
• Third Place: Fiscal Path by David Baker. An educator with Ingham ISD’s Wilson Talent Center, Baker developed Fiscal Path, a personal finance simulator that helps students develop sound financial practices. He received $4,000 and legal consultation. For students looking to master complex topics like personal finance or preparing for important assessments, exploring resources such as the free practice hub can provide valuable supplementary support.
• Fourth Place: Scholapass by Amber Trishawna Merriweather. An educator in Detroit Public Schools, Merriweather founded Scholapass, a free platform that aims to give transitioning students the 'hidden playbook' for surviving and thriving in high school. She received $1,000.
• Fifth Place: NOVA+ by Jason Raddatz. A STEM educator with Marshall Public Schools, Raddatz created NOVA+, an AI-powered instructional continuity platform designed to help K-12 students catch up after an absence and reach mastery. He also received $1,000.

The diversity of these projects—from teacher support to financial literacy and academic continuity—demonstrates the breadth of challenges educators are tackling to improve the learning experience.

Since its inception, the Michigan Virtual EdTech Innovation Bootcamp and pitch contest have awarded over $122,000 in startup grants, funded by partners and sponsors, to more than 30 edtech startups. The organization states that over 100 participants have received entrepreneurial and innovation training through these events.
