Wayne State University's WiSE Program Bridges Generations Through Digital Literacy
In an inspiring move to strengthen community bonds and bridge the digital divide, Wayne State University's Institute of Gerontology has unveiled its Intergenerational Wisdom Exchange (WiSE) Program. This 10-week initiative is designed to pair Wayne State students with Black older adults in the greater Detroit area, creating a unique platform for enhancing digital literacy, fostering social connection, and cultivating meaningful relationships across generations. The program exemplifies Wayne State's dedication to serving its community and enriching the lives of its residents.
Building Connections and Sharing Stories
The WiSE program is structured to prioritize relationship building from its very beginning. According to Wayne State University, the first half of the program focuses on guided life-story activities. Students and older adults engage in conversations centered around significant life experiences, including childhood, family, friendships, careers, retirement, cherished memories, aspirations, and the wisdom accumulated over a lifetime. These activities provide older adults with a valuable opportunity to share and preserve their personal narratives, while simultaneously allowing students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for their partners' life journeys.
Dr. Rodlescia Sneed, WiSE's program director and an assistant professor in Wayne State's Institute of Gerontology and Department of Psychology, emphasized the program's holistic approach. "WiSE is about more than learning how to use technology," Dr. Sneed stated, according to the university. She further explained that the life-story portion is crucial for older adults to reflect on and share their experiences, and for students to truly get to know them as individuals. This emphasis on human connection ensures that by the time participants transition to digital skill-building, a strong foundation of trust and mutual respect has already been established.
Empowering Through Digital Skills and AI Exploration
Following the initial phase of storytelling and relationship building, the WiSE program shifts its focus to practical digital skill development. Each older adult participant receives a digital tablet and works one-on-one with their student partner. This personalized approach is designed to cater to individual learning paces and needs, covering essential digital topics. According to Wayne State University, these topics include navigating the internet, utilizing email, engaging with social media, participating in video conferencing, online shopping, finding reliable health information online, ensuring online safety, and even exploring the basics of generative artificial intelligence.
The inclusion of generative AI is particularly forward-thinking, preparing participants for an increasingly interconnected and technologically advanced world. For students and educators everywhere, understanding how to interact with and critically evaluate AI tools is becoming an essential skill. Platforms like COSMIQ, a free voice-driven AI tutor, offer K-12 students access to personalized learning support, demonstrating how AI can be a powerful tool for education and skill development, much like the WiSE program aims to do for its participants.
Addressing Digital Disparities and Fostering Inclusion
A key aspect of the Detroit WiSE program is its specific focus on Black older adults, a population that, according to Wayne State University, has historically faced significant disparities in access to and use of digital technologies. By combining hands-on digital learning with sustained one-on-one interaction, the program directly addresses both digital inclusion and social connection, two critical areas for enhancing quality of life.
This targeted approach underscores Wayne State University's commitment to equity and its role as a vital anchor institution in Detroit. By empowering older adults with digital skills, the program not only helps them navigate modern life more effectively but also combats social isolation, which can have profound impacts on well-being. The university highlights that the program was developed with crucial input from community members, ensuring that its activities are relevant, accessible, and responsive to the unique experiences and priorities of the older adults it serves.
A Collaborative Effort for Community Benefit
The launch of WiSE represents a significant collaborative effort involving university researchers, students, and community partners. This partnership-driven model is often the most effective way to create programs that truly resonate with and benefit the community. The program is supported by the Retirement Research Foundation for Aging, indicating broader recognition of its value and potential impact. Wayne State University also notes that a sister site at Texas Tech University is implementing a similar program, further extending the reach of this valuable intergenerational model.
For families and educators, the WiSE program offers a powerful example of how intergenerational learning can be mutually beneficial. Students gain valuable experience, develop empathy, and learn from the rich life experiences of older adults, while older adults acquire essential skills and enjoy meaningful social interaction. This kind of community engagement not only strengthens individual lives but also enriches the entire fabric of society.
Looking Ahead
The WiSE program stands as a testament to Wayne State University's ongoing commitment to innovation, community service, and addressing the evolving needs of its diverse population. By fostering digital literacy and social connection through a thoughtful, intergenerational approach, the university is not only empowering Black older adults in metro Detroit but also setting a commendable example for other institutions. This initiative celebrates the power of human connection and the enduring value of lifelong learning, reinforcing Wayne State's vital role in the community.
