Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA: What's the Difference?
The difference comes down to one thing: whether your GPA gives extra credit for course difficulty. An unweighted GPA puts every class on the same 4.0 scale; a weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses like Honors, AP, or IB, so it can climb above 4.0. Both are useful, and our free weighted GPA calculator can show you each side by side.
Unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA caps at 4.0. An A is worth 4.0 whether it's in a regular class or the toughest AP on campus. It's simple and easy to compare across students, but it doesn't reward you for taking a heavier load.
Weighted GPA
A weighted GPA adds a bonus for rigor. The most common pattern is roughly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class might count as a 5.0. That said, the exact bonus and the maximum possible GPA vary a lot from school to school — some cap at 5.0, others use different steps entirely. Always check how your school does it.
- Honors A — often counts around 4.5 (a +0.5 bump), but this varies.
- AP/IB A — often counts around 5.0 (a +1.0 bump), but this varies.
- Regular A — stays 4.0 on both scales.
A quick example
Imagine two A's and one B, all 1-credit classes. Unweighted, that's (4.0 + 4.0 + 3.0) / 3 = 3.67. Now suppose one of those A's was in an AP class worth a 5.0 and the B was in an Honors class worth 3.5. Weighted, that's (5.0 + 4.0 + 3.5) / 3 = 4.17. Same grades, different story — the weighted number reflects the harder schedule.
Which one do colleges look at?
It depends. Many colleges recalculate your GPA on their own scale to compare applicants fairly, and most look at your transcript and course rigor directly rather than trusting a single number. The honest answer is that both matter, and what counts most is taking a challenging schedule and doing well in it. Policies vary by school, so don't assume.
