What's a Good MCAT Score?

The MCAT gives you a total score from 472 to 528, built from four sections that each run 118 to 132. The scale is centered so that roughly 500 is about the midpoint, a score of around 510+ is generally considered good, and the most competitive programs often look for about 515+. You can turn practice section results into a total estimate with our free MCAT score calculator.

How the MCAT is scored

Each of the four sections is scored from 118 to 132, and your total is the sum of all four — so the lowest possible total is 472 and the highest is 528. Because the sections are centered around the middle of their range, a balanced performance across all four usually serves you better than spiking one section and dragging another.

  • Chemical and Physical Foundations — 118 to 132.
  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) — 118 to 132.
  • Biological and Biochemical Foundations — 118 to 132.
  • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations — 118 to 132.

Percentiles are published by the AAMC and shift slightly over time, so treat these as a guide and check the current tables:

COSMIQ — About COSMIQ

  • Around 500 — roughly the midpoint of the scale.
  • 506-509 — above the middle, a solid score.
  • 510+ — generally considered a good, competitive score.
  • 515+ — high, often what the most competitive programs look for.

Good is relative to your school list

Medical schools publish the median MCAT of their admitted students, and that median varies widely. Look up the schools you're targeting and aim at or above their medians — and remember the MCAT is read alongside your GPA, clinical experience, essays, and interviews. A balanced, authentic application matters; a high score alone won't carry a thin file. Confirm each school's current data, since it changes year to year.
