WVU's STEAM Innovation Alliance: Nurturing Young Entrepreneurs Across West Virginia

West Virginia University (WVU) is embarking on a significant initiative to cultivate the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs within the state. According to a recent announcement, the university is launching the STEAM Innovation Alliance, an ambitious program aimed at expanding hands-on education in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) combined with practical entrepreneurship skills for middle and high school students. This effort, supported by a substantial investment, seeks to empower young people to connect academic learning with real-world problem-solving and community development.

The Alliance is a collaborative undertaking, spearheaded by the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative’s (WVPEC) STEAM Technical Assistance Center and WVU Extension. It represents a $2.6 million investment, including $1.14 million in matching funds and in-kind support from the university, made possible through a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) POWER Initiative. This funding mechanism specifically targets projects that foster economic opportunities in Appalachian coal communities through workforce development and economic diversification.

Bridging STEAM and Entrepreneurship for Student Success

At its core, the STEAM Innovation Alliance is designed to integrate technical STEAM skills with an entrepreneurial mindset. According to WVU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Beverly Wendland, the initiative recognizes that "innovation begins with opportunity and that our educators are essential to creating that opportunity for students." The Alliance intends to help students develop not only the technical competencies crucial for future careers but also the creativity and problem-solving abilities needed to envision and build solutions for their communities.

Over the next three years, the Alliance projects reaching 300 educators and 15,000 students. This will be achieved through a partnership between WVPEC’s STEAM Technical Assistance Center specialists, who focus on delivering engaging, hands-on STEAM learning experiences, and WVU Extension Young Innovators faculty, who specialize in preparing students with practical entrepreneurial skills. Through these integrated activities, students are expected to hone leadership, ideation, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication abilities.

Specifically, STEAM TAC specialists will develop new STEAM-focused tracks for the Young Innovators program, incorporating engineering design and real-world technical skills. Conversely, Young Innovators’ entrepreneurship experts will help embed business planning, problem validation, and workforce readiness into existing STEAM TAC lessons. This cross-pollination of expertise aims to provide a comprehensive learning experience for students.

Empowering Educators Through Professional Development

A crucial component of the STEAM Innovation Alliance is its focus on sustained professional learning opportunities for middle and high school teachers. During the 2026-2027 academic year, the STEAM Technical Assistance Center plans to collaborate with four West Virginia counties to recruit teacher cohorts. These educators will participate in professional development specifically designed around STEAM and entrepreneurship education, developed in partnership with WVU Extension.

The initiative is set to expand significantly, reaching an additional six county cohorts in its second year and eight more in the third. This phased approach aims to establish a growing statewide network of educators equipped with the skills and resources to deliver innovative, career-connected learning experiences in their classrooms. Donna Hoylman Peduto, Executive Director of WVPEC, highlighted the synergy, stating that WVPEC STEAM TAC’s "statewide reach to schools, educators, and workforce partners" aligns perfectly with WVU Extension’s Young Innovators Program, which "develops an entrepreneurial mindset in students."

Developing New Pathways for Expertise

Beyond direct professional development, the Alliance will also focus on creating new avenues for educators to demonstrate and build their expertise. According to the university, the STEAM Innovation Alliance will develop, pilot, and refine a new microcredential in STEAM and entrepreneurship education. The long-term goal is to expand this into a stackable series in collaboration with the WVU Mountaineer Micro Academy.

Teachers participating in the regional cohorts will be encouraged to pursue this microcredential, which will also be made available to both in-service and preservice educators across West Virginia. This credentialing pathway offers a structured way for teachers to deepen their knowledge and skills, directly impacting the quality of education students receive in these vital areas.

Lauren Prinzo, a community and economic development specialist with WVU Extension, emphasized the broader impact: "This investment is helping to cultivate the talent that will drive West Virginia’s future workforce, economy, and communities." By investing in both students and their educators, the STEAM Innovation Alliance aims to foster a generation prepared not only for future jobs but also to create them.

A Commitment to West Virginia's Future

The STEAM Innovation Alliance represents a holistic approach to youth development and economic revitalization in West Virginia. By combining the academic rigor of STEAM with the practical application of entrepreneurship, and by investing significantly in teacher professional development, WVU and its partners are working to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. This commitment reflects the university’s land-grant mission to work with communities and expand opportunities across the state, ultimately strengthening the workforce and helping West Virginia prosper.
